Medical career program helps revive North Chicago schools

On April 30th, 2015, North Chicago Community High School hosted the Health Professions Education Consortium annual meeting.

The meeting was a tremendous success, and brought many groups together to focus on the pathways programs for the region, as well as other future health professions careers emerging in the field. There were numerous individuals that came up to school leaders to share how exhilarated they were by the overall experience at the high school, and appreciated the work of the team and students. Many of guests were very moved by the stories and experiences that the students shared during the program, and expressed that it was one of the most uplifting mornings, and wished that they could experience that everyday. Read on for coverage of the event by the Chicago Tribune.

Give ‘Til it Hurts

North Chicago Community High School hosted a blood drive on January 15th and over 40 participants.  The donation of one person can save up to 3 lives.  Potentially, we were able to help 120 patients.  Blood donations help many people from blood transfusions to traumatic injuries.  Blood donation is one of the most important unselfish acts a person can do in life to help others.  The next blood drive is March 12th.  Come out and help save lives!

NJ – Operation Christmas

Clockwise Back Row: Christian Torres, Jean-Paul Anyansi, Genesis Navarro, Nancy Mendoza, Arianda Zondio and Joshua Quiroz Clockwise Front Row: Jeremias Figueroa, and Bianca Echavarria

On December 6, NJROTC volunteered their time to the Federal Health Care Center located in North Chicago, also known as the VA hospital. The highly enthusiastic cadets decorated Xmas trees throughout the VA facilities.  NJ calls this yearly community service project “Operation Xmas”, this is one of the community service projects that most cadets truly enjoy doing because they are giving back to our nation’s veterans in a special way.  Many of the disabled veterans and staff members sincerely appreciated the cadets for volunteering their time and effort. They made sure that the cadets felt at home and wholeheartedly welcomed them to their facilities.

Senior Citizens’ Breakfast

In partnership with the City of North Chicago & North Chicago Community School District 187, for the past 28 years, we’ve celebrated our Senior Citizens with a holiday breakfast.  The breakfast is an event that all North Chicago Seniors look forward to and is a way for the community to show our respect and gratitude for them.  On Thursday, December 11th, we celebrated our 29th year with our senior citizens.  NCCHS students from Student Council, NJROTC and National Honor Society served as hosts/hostesses while the NCCHS Choir sang various holiday selections.  For the 2nd year, City & School Officials, along with members of the NC Fire Dept., served breakfast to all attendees.  During the breakfast, Mr. Bob May was remembered and honored for his commitment to the breakfast and his service with the district.

North Chicago vs the New Zealand National Basketball Team

North Chicago played the New Zealand National Basketball Team on Sunday, December 7, 2015.  Even though North Chicago beat New Zealand 82-59, the boys from Westlake were grateful for the hospitality North Chicago, NCCHS and the community showed them.  See the attached letter from Richard Gorrett, Programme Development Manager. Congratulations to both teams!

Good evening everybody,

Just arrived back to the hotel and currently getting our laundry in before we check out of our hotel tomorrow and get on the train tomorrow evening to head off to New York! A great time of the day to be doing laundry but I don’t think the boys will be getting to sleep too early tonight as they are all still very energetic after the game today.

On behalf of us at Student Horizons and the whole of the Westlake Boys Basketball team I’d just like to say a massive thank you for what you did for us this afternoon. Often people say that there is no-one in the world who knows how to provide true hospitality like the Americans, and now we know why! Thank you all for making today such a great experience for the boys as this will be something that they will remember for the rest of their lives. Please also pass on this email and our thanks to everyone else who was involved today, whether it was the boys on the court, the people timing & scoring the game or those who prepared the ‘soul food’ for us after the game, particularly the awesome cake!!

We will be sending you pictures of us back in New Zealand with our t-shirts on and with the plaque proudly placed on the school wall for all to see! We also had a good laugh on the bus journey home when watching the games on the dvd that you gave to us.

I could not think of a better way to finish our time here in Chicago and unfortunately we now have to move on but fortunately we know where to go when we return to Chicago next time. As I said tonight please let us know when you are coming to New Zealand and hopefully we can show you some true New Zealand hospitality like you showed us today.

Again thank you for everything!!

Kind regards,

Richard Gorrett
Programme Development Manager
